‘Eze Goes to School’ Author, Onuorah Nzekwu is dead

The death has been announced of renowned writer and author of Eze Goes to School, Onuorah Nzekwu.

The literary doyen passed away at the age of 89, Friday night. The real cause of his death is still unknown at the moment.

Pa Nzekwu became popular for his book entitled Eze Goes to School, written in 1963.

While commiserating with his family over the incident, Abdulahi said the late writer would forever be remembered for his literary works, which preached about the importance of education.

“Yes, it is true but I can’t confirm what actually the real cause of his death was; but it is a big loss to the Nigerian literary community.

“We would miss him dearly and we pray God to grant the literary icon eternal rest in his bosom,” he told our reporter.

When asked on what ANA is doing to help the aged and struggling writers, Abdulahi said the association needed to take census of those writers alive so as to make the necessary moves.

“Well, ANA is doing its best but we still need to take census of those icons alive. We can do more of cooperative programmes for them. We might not have the money but we still need to know them.

“For instance, we have a large portion of land in Mpape, Abuja for the association, the government can come in and build houses for those literary icons,” he added.

Born February 19, 1928 in Kafanchan, Kaduna State, Nzekwu was a writer who explored the internal conflicts inherent in the relationship of the educated Igbo to traditional Igbo culture.

Nzekwu’s first novel, Wand of Noble Wood (1961), portrays in moving terms the futility of a Western pragmatic approach to the problems created by an African’s traditional religious beliefs.

In 1963 he published a children’s book, Eze Goes to School (written with Michael Crowder), and his third novel, Highlife for Lizards, appeared in 1965.

He had worked as a teacher, civil servant and journalist, also wrote Wand of Noble Wood, Blade Among the Boys and other fictional and non-fictional works.

He was also the pioneer general manager of News Agency of Nigeria.

Nigerian Lecturers Are Still Using Old Methods To Teach - NACOSS President

Well, I strongly believe that one of the greatest challenge in Nigeria System of education, especially in the Technology world is lack of conducive environment. I always make an advocacy that, IT innovation parks should be sighted at least in each geopolitical zone. It’s well known that if you train accounting students, you build financial institutions, if you train medical personnel’s you build medical facilities and training centres , then if we see the importance of IT in Nigeria there should be need for Innovation Centres, China of today started from somewhere and Nigeria Can start from somewhere. Let there be an innovation Centre, some technologies that is new to us today are already outdated in some countries, because there’s is no supportive research centres. The curriculum need serious attention, majority of the higher institutions are still offering some “outdated” courses and they have refused to upgrade. It’s hard for you to see a computer science graduate from especially public institution with a specialization, either in Digital Marketing, Networks, Hardware, Graphics, software engineering, etc. and every academic session over 10,000 (Ten thousand) Computer Science Students graduates from one higher institution or the other, the big question remains. Which company/firms are ready to absorb these graduates?, which innovation center in Nigeria can breed this fresh graduates?. Imagine what this country would turn to be if only 1/10 of these fresh graduates are actually useful to the IT industry. This country will build a silicon valley soon.

Well, it’s a big mystery, but the truth has to be said, there is nothing like a computer lab or research lab, talk more facilities of lab with internet connection for research work. I could remember the first time I entered a room that has a few dilapidated system was in my second year when we went for CSC 201 lecture and after that day there was nothing like a practical class again. It’s really embarrassing and I strongly believe this is also applicable to higher institutions in Nigeria. With my Position as the National President I have received lots of complaints about IT students complaining of issues of poor computer laboratories and practical courses, although we have limited intervention to this issues, but we as a body have tried to collaborate with many ICT training centres to organize very subsidised fees to up to 70% discount just to make sure that our members don’t come out of the higher institution half baked.

ASUU Calls For JAMB Registrar’s Resignation

Following alleged lopsidedness in the on-going registration of candidates by Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, the Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Universities, (ASUU) University of Ibadan Chapter, Dr Deji Omole has called on the Registrar of JAMB, Professor Ishaq Oloyede to voluntarily resign from office.

The academic union also asked the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu to call the registrar to order to lessen the difficulty being experienced by the candidates.
Dr Omole said the board had outlived its usefulness and the best thing is to scrap it and allow universities design their standard examination for their own candidates.
He noted that the fact that a mock examination was stopped due to logistic reasons underscored the point of alleged incompetence of the Registrar, noting that if candidates could not do mock how sure are they to pass the examination.

He said: “Why will anybody make life difficult for candidates whose parents are struggling to live under the terrible condition the government has made them to live in?"
“Why would somebody introduce changes that are only known by members of the board? We have made case for the scrapping of this body because in the present instance the introduction of different registration procedures has turned candidates to victims of fraud.”while different centres now make business by arranging with private schools who bring all their students in group to come and register while children of the masses look on.”

“This is a failed approach to change and the Registrar admitted this with the cancellation of the mock examination. How can we ensure that the candidates prepare well for the exams when they spend weeks waiting for Personal Identification Number and are at the mercy of registration officers who force them to go to cybercafe where they have arrangements to first create their profile before they can have their PIN”

“This is where people are duping Nigerian children. This is a total failure. Students must have at least three months for registration, its procedure must be open and their options to public universities must not be limited to serve the agenda of the proprietors of private universities”, he argued.

Ajayi Crowther University Denies Shut Down Rumour

The Management of Ajayi Crowther University wishes to inform the general public that the University is not shut down as apparently being rumoured by mischievous elements in the University.

Rather, the University is currently on Easter break from Wednesday 12th April 2017 to Sunday 23rd April 2017.  Immediately after, the Mid-Semester Examinations will hold from Thursday 27th to Friday 28th April 2017. Although, the University experienced recently a very common incident of unruly behaviour by some students who have appeared before the institution’s Students’ Disciplinary Committee; leading to the expulsion and suspension of students found guilty, given the University’s highly cherished character of a faith-based Christian institution governed by rules and regulations in conformity with Christian Ethics and commitment to raising Godly intellectuals.

In this wise, the University insists that its students be disciplined, well dressed, punctual at lectures and worship service, among other requirements as dictated in the institution’s Students’ Handbook on rules and regulations. Consequently, the University will not allow any act of cultism, taking of narcotic drugs and alcohol, sexual immorality on campus and other dissident behaviors that are at variance with the principles of a faith-based institution.

The Management is doing its best to ensure academic excellence, protection of the rights of the students, provision of sporting and recreational facilities, and a serene, safe and conducive environment for learning. Moreover, Ajayi Crowther University is comparatively a very low fee charging private University in Nigeria; the University allows payment of fees in three instalments. The University Hostel facilities, which provide students with the desired comfort, are owned and operated by Dioceses of the Anglican Church. Fees charged for accommodation are not just inclusive of residency; electricity, water, refuse disposal and salaries of hostel management staff are also components of the overall school fees.

The University provides students with relatively adequate facilities to guarantee their peaceful and progressive study experience in the University. Expectedly, the University is staffed with distinguished Professors and other categories of qualified academics who ensure that the institution continually rank among the best in the various courses of offer in the University. In the same spirit, the University provides scholarship to students including cash awards to those who are recognized as University scholars on the basis of the exceptional students’ Cumulative Grade Point Averages (CGPAs) in First Class and Second Class Upper Division. Gladly, all academic programmes are accredited.

Ajayi Crowther University remains the preferred choice for parents and candidates who seek education in Godly environment. The University has credibility as it has a Bishop of the Anglican Communion as the Vice-Chancellor, Chief (Dr.) Wole Olanipekun (SAN) as the Pro-Chancellor, Professor Emeritus Ayo Banjo as the Chairman, Board of Trustees and Sixty-Five Bishops of the Supra Diocesan Board (West) as Proprietors.

ASUU Warning Strike Hits UNIBADAN

Academic activities were paralysed on Wednesday at the University of Ibadan (UI) as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) commenced its one week warning strike.
The strike forced most students to stay indoors at their halls of residence, as the strike monitoring committee put in place by the union led by the Chairman of the ASUU in the Branch, Dr Deji Omole monitored development.

Omole, who moved round the faculties to monitor compliance, described the strike as successful and urged members to continue to defend their interests.
“The congress of ASUU, UI branch, at its meeting of April 4, received permission from the national body of the union, declaring one week warning strike beginning from Wednesday, April 5 to Tuesday, April 11,” he said.
He said the warning strike was to compel the university administration to address pending welfare matters affecting the members.
He identified some of the issues to include, shortfall and fractional payment of salary of members, illegal pension deductions, non-payment of postgraduate supervision allowance and non-payment of promotion arrears.
“During the strike period our members are not to be involved in teaching, supervision, or attend to statutory and ad hoc meetings,” Omole said.
He advised members to remain resolute and await further directives from the leadership of the union at the branch level.

Guaranteed Ways To Pass Your WAEC Exam In One Sitting

West African Examination Council (WAEC) is an
examination board that prepares and conducts the West African Senior School Certificate Examination. This senior school certificate is the University entry examinations in West African countries. The participating countries include Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Gambia and Liberia.

WAEC is very important. As a matter of fact, it is the
first external examination that determines your admission status. You must not fail waec. So many things will go wrong if you fail waec. That’s why you should do everything within your ability to pass waec in one sitting.

For the last three consecutive years, about 60% of
students have failed these exams. However, with adequate preparations, students in West African countries can actually pass this examination. The tips on how to adequately prepare for the WAEC examination form the basis of discussion here below where they will be highlighted.

Tips for Passing WAEC Exams

1. Have a Decent Timetable for Your Studies.

The WAEC examinations are not the kind of exams that
students just get in and perform well. You must have a
decent timetable that outlines your reading schedule. This schedule should allocate adequate time for all your
subjects.

2. Don't Depend On Waec Expo

This is the reason why so many candidates fail waec. They depend on answers that will be sent to them on the waec examination day. Getting waec answers on the exam day is still very valid. You can get both waec theory and Objective answers in your inbox. However, they are not to be trusted. You can be a victim of wrong answers.

3. Have Confidence in Yourself

You should be very confident in yourself and believe that you will pass the exams. Though the exams are usually hard for students to pass, a confident student will easily pass the exams and proceed to the University. Therefore, students should exercise self confidence before and during the exams.

4. Don't Procrastinate

Later things. This is the top language of procrastinators. You need to start anything you need to start so as to pass waec. Do not delay or surrender.

5. Take Notes when you Study

During your allocated time for study, it is important to
take notes on some important points. These notes might help you when doing a final revision for the annual WAEC exams.

6. Don't Be Afraid of Some Subjects

Maths is difficult. This is the language many waec
candidates. Yours may not be mathematics. But make sure you kill any fear you have for any subject. They are all simple.

7. Revise Past Papers

While doing your revision, you should allocate good time revising the past papers. As a trend by the WAEC,
examination tests are drawn from previous papers. They only twist the questions to get a new examination.
Therefore, you should not ignore the past papers and
actually take it as a preparation strategy to revise them.
Read all the Examination Rules Before Exams Being a
regional examination body, WAEC has strict rules that
govern its examinations. You should thus read all the rules before getting into an exam room. Though the rules will be written in front of the question paper, some students fail to read them during examination period and thus show the importance of reading them prior to the exams.

8. Get Adequate Sleep and Eat Well

As the examination dates approaches, you should have
healthy meals and give yourself enough sleeping time. This is one of the preparation strategies that have been
ignored by students who opt for extending study hours
during the night. This could be the reason for the regular failure by students. Get this strategy right and sleep well.

9. Improve in your Writing

Your writing is the first thing examiners look at. Make
your writing very clear and simple. Write in a very simple
and understandable English.

10. Compose yourself and Properly Present your
Answer

You should plan to compose yourself during the
examination. Learn the right sitting postures for
examinations. And don’t be in a rush to answer questions during the exams.

11. And yes.. pray before and after your Exams.

The above mention tips should be followed by senior
school students who want to prepare adequately for their forthcoming West Africa Examination Council examination.

JAMB UTME Exams Hours Reduced To 2 Hours

What is the time/hours for JAMB UTME exam?

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Registrar/Chief Executive Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, today in Kaduna, during the opening ceremony of a strategic planning retreat on the monitoring, supervision and evaluation of 2017 UTME stated that candidates writing the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) this year would spend two hours instead of three hours.

He said the reduction in exam time was in line with international best standards and practices where no candidate is kept in an examination such as UTME for more than two hours. In his words: “We are going to reduce the duration of the examination for this year’s UTME. You cannot keep children of this age for three hours. For their age, the maximum time you can keep them is two hours. So, we are considering the reduction in the time they spend because once it is more than two hours you can’t expect that they will retain their presence of mind.”

Oloyede added that out of 13 commercial banks and the Nigeria Postal Service that have signified interest in the sales of the admission forms, only nine have paid for the number of application documents they required in the first instance. In a related development, since JAMB started the sale of the 2017 UTME form, candidates have been finding it hard to complete their registration. Some have been complaining about difficulties in getting the pin to be used to register for the exam.

JAMB Adopts “Eight-Key Device” System For 2017 CBT Exam

In order to deal with the challenge of computer low level literacy of some candidates, especially with the phobia for the mouse, the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB has disclosed that it will adopt an “eight-key device” for the 2017 UTME.

Speaking during the Strategic Planning retreat on Supervision and Evaluation of 2017 UTME examinations the JAMB Registrar noted that in order to ensure equity and level playground for all candidates taking the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, the Board has designed a system that will allow candidates use only eight (cool keys without the use of the mouse.

All the candidates need to do is to press the letters A,B,C,D for responses (answers) to questions and keys P, N, S and R representing different functions as follows:
P = Previous question
N = Next question
S = Submit responses when candidate has finished examination
R = Reverse (do not intend to go further to submit again)

According to him, this new method will eradicate the challenge of low computer literacy and phobia for mouse by some candidates.

On the new arrangements for the visually impaired candidates, the JAMB Registrar said Digital Bridge Institute in partnership with the board has agreed to set up three dedicated centres in Abuja, Lagos and Kano in 2018.

But for the 2017 UTME, board has reached an understanding with the association for the blind persons in Nigeria and blind students in Lagos that an abridged approach would be used for the 2017 UTME, whereby all prospective blind candidates would be invited to three centres in the country for special assessment in their subjects of choice and relevance to their desired courses and programmes.

Expel students with less than 0.5 CGPA, Buhari orders VCs

Pres, Buhari yesterday gave vice chancellors a marching order to expel students with less than 0.5 Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) from next academic session, The Nation reports.

Such students, he said, are unserious elements that should not be accommodated any longer in higher institutions. Buhari spoke at the 31st convocation of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT).

He said: “We must stop to continue housing adventurers, who have no business remaining in the universities beyond the time specified for their studies in the universities.

In that wise, it is being proposed that at the end of this academic year, any student with less than 0.5 CGPA should cease to be a student of the university and should be shown the way out.

The universities must continue to have people who are serious in what they have come to do. If you have less than 0.5 in your CGPA, you are out. You are out for good so that the space will be left for those who have come to do serious business."

Waec To Release Exam Results 60 Days After Exam

The West African Examination Council [WAEC] has made known to the general public that the council has decided to release examination results 60days after the last examination prior to the last 90 days earlier been released.

The WAEC HNO Olu Adenipekun, told the News Agency of Nigeria that the waiting days will now be 60 days as against 90 days previously.

Mr. Adenipekun spoke with NAN on the side-line of the council’s 65th anniversary celebration which began on Thursday in Lagos.

According to him, the development is one of such steps being taken by the council to meet its mandate of delivering quality service to all stakeholders.

“All hands must be on deck to ensure that the innovation, tagged: `Project 60’, is effective from this year.

“For sometimes now, we normally use about 90 days, from the day of the last paper of the examination to release the result.

“For the past 15 months, when I assumed office as the HNO in Nigeria, we have been working to reduce that `waiting period’ by 50 per cent.

“This is what initially brought about what we had also called `Project 45’ but we want to take it gradually,” Mr. Adenipekun said.

He told NAN that for the 2017 May/June WASSCE, which is about to start, the intention of the board was to release the result within 60 to 65 days.

“So, this is how we came about ‘Project 60’; and in the coming years, the council will talk about `Project 45’,” he said.

He added that council was hoping that in the next two years, it would be able to release results of its examinations within 45 days after the last paper is taken. On whether the development was tied to the JAMB’s insistence that candidates should make their WASSCE results available as prerequisite for admissions, the HNO said that it was not meant to address any issue.

Mr. Adenipekun noted that one of the major objectives for introducing project 60 was to reposition the council and portray it as an organisation that was delivering its mandate.

According to him, WAEC should also be seen as being always ready to review its operations and delivery time. “This may also come as good news for our current SSS 3 students, who are about to write the 2017 WASSCE.

“Basically there is need for our SSS 3 students to be happy because they are our principal stakeholders.

“I am sure reducing the waiting period will even make them happier,” he said.

NANS React To The Lecturer That Slapped Unilorin SU President

NANS KWARA CONDEMN THE BARBARIC ACT OF DR. AJIBOYE SUB DEAN FACULTY OF ENGINEERING UNILORIN

"In an unjust society silence is a crime "

We are distressed to hear the unconstitutional act of the Sub Dean Faculty of Engineering Unilorin by slapping the Student Union President of the university.

It was reported that the President Shobowale Lukman left for the CBT centre since morning and had not even eaten at all so as to get there early and help the students.

On getting there, He tried Soliciting for students of the college of health sciences oke-oyi who had been there since so that they can write their exam early and go back on time due to distance.
Adding that he was directed to the office of the secretary and the CBT centre and on getting there, he met them talking and decided to wait till they were done talking and Dr Ajiboye noticed him waiting and told him to step back which he did, and again told him to again, he did and then told him to get out and that he tried explaining that he is the students union president and before be knew it, he dipped his hands in his eyes.

However, we appreciate the Vice Chancellor Professor Abdulganiy Ambali for calling the Student Union into order and assuring that justice will be put into order in due course. Its sardonic that the Dr. Ajiboye only wants to tarnish the image of the university that is well known for zero tolerance in term of indiscipline.

We equally appreciate the Student Union of the better by far University of Ilorin for the maturity displayed and standing firm for justice to prevail.

While we await the expedite action of the university, I enjoin all the students to be law abiding as we will not relent in our bid in catering for the welfares of the entire students in Kwara State.

In conclusion, no one is above the law and every man deserves justice.

We say NO to injustice!!!
We say NO to impunity!!!
We support Unilorin SU!!!

Lecturer Slaps Unilorin S.U President

The drama ensued at the UNILORIN C.B.T center when a lecturer from the faculty of engineering slapped Comrade Shobowale Lukman (Eminent), the Students Union President, while he was mediating on behalf of some students who were inappropriately delayed in writing their exams.
At about 4:20pm, some students from the department of Nursing, College of health sciences who have been waiting since around 9am, approached the students union president to intercede on their behalf in a bid to write their examinations after a long wait.

The students union president, in the spirit of solidarity, proceeded to the appropriate body with the aim of dialoguing with the exam coordinators, so the 50 Nursing students write their exams to prevent them from missing the bus scheduled to take them back to their faculty.

It was in this process that the Sub-dean, faculty of engineering, Dr. Ajiboye slapped him after he politely approached and introduced himself while trying to meet with the C.B.T Secretary, Dr. Tomori.

Dr. Ajiboye then rudely shooed him off and while he (Eminent) stepped aside, to converse with his colleague, the said lecturer approached him and questioned him as to why he decided to murmur after he has spoken and he then slapped him.

This resulted in an uproar from the students and it took the quick thinking of Students Union president to calm the already angry students who were ready to cause a bigger scene at the center.

Dr. Ajiboye’s action has really violated the ethics of the school, and the situation should be looked into by the disciplinary committee, in a bid to forestall future occurrences.

While we spoke to some students, who witnessed the scene, many described it as an”aberration and an injustice” on the part of the lecturer, as that would not be the first time such act would be perpetrated by either teaching and non-teaching staffs of the school.
